Liverpool f.c injury news

Liverpool aren't expected to make signings but a number of injury boosts could help the Reds. With little over a week left until the January transfer window closes, Liverpool fans are becoming increasingly resigned to the fact that the Reds will not be signing anyone this month. Coinciding with a loss in form that has seen Jurgen Klopp 's side surrender top spot in the Premier League, it has been a bitter pill to swallow and one made worse by the reigning champions' continued injury woes.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez remain long-term absentees after suffering serious knee injuries, and while the Dutchman appears to be ahead of schedule and have been pictured running and kicking a ball during his continued rehabilitation, such activities have taken place away from Liverpool 's AXA Training Centre with thoughts of a return to the near future somewhat premature.

The duo will no doubt have their eyes set on returns before the end of the season, with a place in the Netherlands and England squads' for EURO a potential prize for their hard-fought efforts, but they will not come back into Klopp's selection reckoning anytime soon.

However, it's better news for the Reds regarding the rest of their walking wounded at a time when they need something to reignite their fortunes most. So what could Liverpool's strongest XI look like after the transfer window slams shut later this month? Theo Squires takes a look Alisson Becker. No doubt, is there? The Brazilian proved again against Manchester United at the weekend why he is the best goalkeeper in the world and is Klopp's undisputed first-choice goalkeeper.

He might have missed his fair share of games through injury in the past 18 months but when he's fit, he starts. End of. Caomhin Kelleher will step up should the year-old suffer another enforced absence, with the young Irishman usurping Adrian as the Reds' deputy shot-stopper. Despite the ever-changing centre-back partnerships at Anfield this season, Liverpool's strongest back four in the absence of Van Dijk and Gomez goes without saying.

Although far from his best this season, Trent Alexander-Arnold remains the Reds' first-choice right-back while Andy Robertson's position at left-back is equally secure despite the signing of Kostas Tsimikas last summer.

Jurgen Klopp confirms Joel Matip’s return from injury is imminent

Fabinho has shone at centre-back this, even though Klopp's side are missing his services in midfield, while Joel Matip will start alongside him when back from injury. The only issue Liverpool have is keeping the Cameroonian fit, with Nat Phillips, Rhys Williams and Jordan Henderson all filling in in his absence in recent weeks.

Klopp has a plethora of midfield options to choose from but, with Fabinho utilised in defence, his strongest trio again seem rather obvious. Henderson is a must, with the Reds having also missed the captain's midfield presence when he has been required to drop into defence, while Thiago Alcantara will be looking to kickstart his Anfield career after injury following his summer move from Bayern Munich.

The final position goes to Gini Wijnaldum, however, with the Dutchman out of contract in the summer and looking increasingly likely to move on, Klopp could start to phase him out as he has does in the past with Emre Can, Daniel Sturridge, Alberto Moreno and Adam Lallana. Should that be the case, Naby Keita is the obvious choice to step in if he can stay fit, with Curtis Jones and vice-captain James Milner also options if Klopp resists changing formation.

For the first time since being unleashed them together back inLiverpool's famous front three might not be as secure as it once was. The Portuguese is the obvious option to step up when fit again, with the year-old currently on track to return next month having been sidelined with a knee injury suffered against Midtjylland at the start of December. With Salah and Mane's places in Liverpool's starting XI unquestioned regardless of form, Firmino is the man most likely to make way.The Brazilian has been instrumental in his performance and consistency during the centre-back crisis, but his midfield skill-set will be badly missed on Sunday.

At the turn of the century, that player's name had shifted to Steven Gerrard, but for different reasons. Gerrard was a Trojan Horse for Liverpool, a player who couldn't be allowed a sighter from anything within 40 yards of goal. The more desperately Liverpool needed their captain, the more he delivered. McManaman is a more curious tale into the psyche of the Scot.

A player free roaming, mercurial and an instigator of attacks. He was every inch a number ten who operated between the lines, finding his spaces at exactly the right time to penetrate and destroy. Ferguson knew if he was allowed to find a game he loved against United, they would inevitably struggle.

The modern day comparisons between both clubs offer varied nostalgia around switches of roles from then to now. United are struggling to establish their status after a long period of success while Liverpool prosper.

At times it has felt for one to succeed the other must suffer.

Jurgen Klopp gives latest Liverpool FC injury update on key defender

The Portuguese already has 11 Premier League goals and seven assists this season. He has rapidly become United's most important player and when you factor both his stats and where on the pitch he operates, it's easy to understand why he is the one now forming part of opposition manager's team talks about stopping the United threat. Should Liverpool play their normal shape — only one player will be charged directly with occupying the spaces Fernandes likes to operate.

Liverpool have used several different players at number six already, but the likelihood is that either Jordan Henderson or Gini Wijnaldum will start in that role. Liverpool will need all of what Fabinho brings in the six role on Sunday, and they could be about to see exactly why they miss him there.

Poring over something meaning

Fernandes has completed live ball passes this season, he has only been able to complete when pressured from an opponent. His through ball completion of 15 also shows that if his space can be compressed, his creativity can be stifled.

He also had a combined successful number of tackles and interceptions. There is no doubt Liverpool will have a plan for Fernandes on Sunday, and it could even include a change of shape to allow a double pivot if they feel the threat is significant.

Yet what has made Liverpool so effective in the is having players who make it seem as though they somehow have more players on the pitch than the opponent, given how varied they are in the roles they can fulfil.

Yesterday he trained completely normal. Diogo Jota has been a longer-term absentee, having picked up a knee injury in the Champions League tie with FC Midtjylland. There was no surgery needed, which was good, but it was a proper injury. There is no real timeframe there. The situation surrounding Kostas Tsimikas is less clear. Jurgen Klopp has provided a promising injury update on Joel Matip but admitted Diogo Jota is not yet close to a return. Matip has been sidelined since going off injured in the draw with West Brom just after Christmas.

The defender was close to making a comeback against Man Utd at the weekend but failed to prove his fitness in time. He could be in line to face Burnley on Thursday though after Klopp revealed the centre-back was in contention.

The reigning champions could really do with Matip returning to the side having been forced to play their last two Premier League fixtures with captain Jordan Henderson deputising in defence. Klopp appears to have lost confidence in fringe men Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams, with Henderson likely to fill the role again if Matip is not deemed ready enough to play a part against Burnley. In the back of Klopp's mind will no doubt be the FA Cup clash at Old Trafford on Sunday, and it would be unlikely he would risk Matip's recovery by playing him in both matches.
